    Meet Dr. Britt Andreatta

Featured speaker from the ATD 2022 conference, and speaker for our chapter program on August 3, Wired to Resist.

Britt, what attracted you to brain science?

Even in high school, I’ve always been someone who likes to help others be better. Honestly, neuroscience was introduced to me in therapy –learning about the amygdala hijack started my ongoing curiosity. I started learning about the neuroscience of learning to better my own craft. And then I knew I had to share what I was learning.

My first book was on the brain science of learning, Wired to Grow: Harness the Power of Brain Science to Learn and Master Any Skill, which has become a go-to source in the learning industry.

How can leaders better introduce change?

I go into depth on this in my book Wired to Resist. What I learned about studying the neuroscience of change is that we're biologically wired to look for all the things that could go wrong and what we could lose.

The basal ganglia takes repeated behaviors and turns them into habits, which is really a well-grooved neural pathway. But it takes, on average, 40 to 50 repetitions to get there.

Change can go much more smoothly and effectively when leaders understand some of these biological components. They can design it better, they can announce it better, and then they can support people in moving through it more quickly. Because, ultimately, we are a resilient species, but we need a little support to be our best and be most adaptive.

Are you willing to share a fun fact about yourself?

I love fly fishing. It's the most Zen-like thing I do. Every summer I commit to two or three weeks in Montana and you’ll find me on the best blue rivers -- they’re called Blue Ribbon Waters. I’ll start in the morning and six, seven hours go by and I won’t notice the time transpired. It’s just so beautiful. And I do catch and release, so in my heart I go back and I catch the same fish several times in a row.

Our August 3 program, Wired to Resist featuring Dr. Britt Andreatta, is shaping up to be the chapter's BIGGEST program of the year! Don't miss out -- you can learn more and register here.

Elizabeth Bayee is now the Director of Certifications for the ATD Rocky Mountain Chapter!

Elizabeth will start by leading the CPTD/APTD fall study group, which you can learn more about by participating in our August 23 information session -- register here.

Watch for our next newsletter on August 8 to learn more about Elizabeth and what she will focus on in this role.

And, a sincere thank you to Yvonne Bogard for co-founding the study group 8 years ago and serving as the Director of Certifications for the chapter up to now.

We're grateful for all you've done, and all the chapter members you've supported in passing their certification exams!

We've got BIG plans for our August 3 program!

Dr. Britt Andreatta will present Wired to Resist: The Neuroscience of Change to our Colorado ATD chapters.

The first 40 to register will receive her book for free, and it will be the focus of a book club that follows a few weeks after the event. You'll have the option to pick up your book at our June and July in-person events.

This is a virtual event, so everyone who wants to join will be able to!

    Learn more and register here.

Meet Mike Kester, facilitator for our June 1 event on Creating Cohesive and Engaged Teams.

    Mike Kester headshot

Mike, how did you become focused on leadership development?

My interest in leadership development started in college when I was lucky enough to be part of a unique multi-year leadership development program. My interest grew as a professional when I was a participant in some outstanding leader development programs when I was a consultant at McKinsey & Company.

I didn't envision a career in this space, though, until years later when I was the co-president of The Regis Company. We built very high-end custom business simulations and my work increasingly focused on leader development, often in partnership with well-known brands in our space (Center for Creative Leadership, Duke Corporate Education, etc.).

Are there any misconceptions about leadership development that you frequently encounter?

There are many misconceptions and mistakes I see in the leadership development space.

First, most organizations think they need to find, or create, the right leadership model, standard, or set of competencies to reflect their unique culture. But creating an exceptional team environment is about a few basic, very human things–too much content, new language, and new models kill learning and growth. From a small non-profit, to a global Fortune 100 company, to a technology innovator, to the military, cohesive teams feel psychologically safe, have great communication norms, and are aligned to a broader sense of purpose.

Second, teaching prescribed approaches to leadership generally stifles growth. Meaningful growth in things that are hard to do only happens when people generate their own insights, which is messy. Leadership development should embrace the mess and build in a lot of space for people to reflect, explore, and discover.

Are you willing to share a fun fact about yourself?

The company I founded is named for an analogy to mountain climbing, but I'm afraid of heights.

Register here to join us in Broomfield for this interactive session led by Mike Kester on June 1.

    Creating Cohesive and Engaged Teams

Wednesday, June 1 | 5:00-6:30 PM | Broomfield Community Center

The best teams—teams that attract and retain the best talent, and way outperform others—feel psychologically safe, have great communication norms, and are aligned to a broader sense of purpose. Unfortunately, these teams are the exception. This means most managers, who are leading in the most challenging environment ever, have never even been part of a great team environment themselves. This is terrifying.

In this interactive event, learn how you can break the cycle of bad bosses, help your people live more human and fulfilled lives through their work, and make them far more effective, creative, and innovative at the same time. Facilitated by Michael Kester.

Book Club: Atlas of the Heart by Brene Brown

    Two virtual meetings:
Thursday, June 9 and Thursday, June 23 | 4:30-5:30 PM

We will read and discuss Dr. Brown's latest book Atlas of the Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience.

    We're giving away a 1-year chapter membership!

Simply join us for our May 4 event, Mentoring Up While Understanding Generations in the Workplace, to be entered into a drawing for a 1-year membership with the ATD Rocky Mountain Chapter.

    Sarah Phelps headshot

Meet Sarah Phelps, our May speaker for the Mentoring Up While Understanding Generations in the Workplace Program.

Sarah, what is "mentoring up" and why is it important?

Traditionally, mentoring up is simply creating a mentoring system that empowers mentees to be active participants in their mentoring relationships.  I am reimaging it to mean so much more.

Are there any misconceptions you frequently encounter about mentoring?

SO many. The most frequent is that mentoring involves an older, more seasoned professional imparting knowledge to a younger, less seasoned employee. A sort of patriarchal and hierarchical model. Mentoring in an organization can go in any direction. The goal is always to build a culture in which every human is valued for their SIKE (Skills, Identity, Knowledge, Experience) and is seen as a source of value.

Are you willing to share a fun fact about yourself?

I worked for the circus!  News at 11!

Mentoring Up While Understanding Generations in the Workplace will take place on Wednesday, May 4 from 5:00-6:30 PM at Hacienda Colorado on Mexico Avenue.

An invitation from Jill L. Bezyak, PhD, CRC, Licensed Psychologist, and Professor from the University of Northern Colorado:

The Rocky Mountain ADA Center has developed a new training for HR professionals on implicit bias towards individuals with disabilities and how it may impact employment opportunities. We are asking for your feedback to ensure it best meets the needs of HR professionals. We are conducting two focus groups to receive feedback on this training, and participants will be able to view the training prior to attending their designated focus group. Your participation and feedback will allow us to further improve the training. Previous experience or knowledge working with individuals with disabilities is not necessary to participate in this focus group.

There are two opportunities to participate in focus groups, which will both be held over Zoom.

    • Wed. April 20th from 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM
    • Thurs. April 21st from 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM

All focus group participants will receive a $25 Amazon gift card for their participation following completion of a brief demographic survey completed after the focus group.

If you are interested in participating in this focus group, please email jill.bezyak@unco.edu indicating your willingness to participate and which date you prefer to attend. At that time, I will send you the training to view and the Zoom link for the focus group.

    Jolie Wills headshot

Meet Jolie Wills, speaker for our program on Workforce Resilience on April 6.

Jolie is the co-founder and director of Hummingly.

Jolie, your website explains that Hummingly was inspired by your experience working in post-disaster environments. What led you to that work?

I’m a cognitive scientist, so I’ve always been interested in how cumulative stress and pressure impact our performance – as humans it’s a side effect of how we’re biologically set up and our organizations consist of a bunch of humans. What I didn’t anticipate is the twist that my professional and personal life had in store for me when the Christchurch earthquakes happened – Christchurch being my home city. After decades being immersed in disasters and interviewing crisis leaders all over the world, we knew what was needed to prepare teams to perform well, especially under pressure. This expertise wasn’t getting into the hands of teams who needed or wanted it, so we packaged it up.

Are there any misconceptions about resilience that you frequently encounter?

There are plenty. Which to pick? One is that resilience is solely the personal responsibility of the employee. We know that factors at the organizational and team levels impact the wellbeing and resilience of our people. Hummingly has a triple responsibility model for wellbeing and resilience with actions needed at the individual, team, and organizational levels. This is fitting because if we get it wrong, the risks are significant and the ramifications will be felt at all three levels – not just with the individual. The exciting piece is that when we get it right, growth, wellbeing, and performance benefits are felt right through the organization.

Are you willing to share a fun fact about yourself?

I’m not sure if it’s a fun fact but definitely an unusual one. I was the only girl at an all-boys school for a couple of years. With the skew in education at the time, that’s what it took to pursue my love of math and science. It’s a time I identify as resilience-building, that’s for sure!
