Meet Sarah Phelps, our May speaker for the Mentoring Up While Understanding Generations in the Workplace Program.

Sarah, what is "mentoring up" and why is it important?

Traditionally, mentoring up is simply creating a mentoring system that empowers mentees to be active participants in their mentoring relationships.  I am reimaging it to mean so much more.

Are there any misconceptions you frequently encounter about mentoring?

SO many. The most frequent is that mentoring involves an older, more seasoned professional imparting knowledge to a younger, less seasoned employee. A sort of patriarchal and hierarchical model. Mentoring in an organization can go in any direction. The goal is always to build a culture in which every human is valued for their SIKE (Skills, Identity, Knowledge, Experience) and is seen as a source of value.

Are you willing to share a fun fact about yourself?

I worked for the circus!  News at 11!

Mentoring Up While Understanding Generations in the Workplace will take place on Wednesday, May 4 from 5:00-6:30 PM at Hacienda Colorado on Mexico Avenue.

Creating Cohesive and Engaged Teams

Wednesday, June 1 | 5:00-6:30 PM | Broomfield Community Center

The best teams—teams that attract and retain the best talent, and way outperform others—feel psychologically safe, have great communication norms, and are aligned to a broader sense of purpose. Unfortunately, these teams are the exception. This means most managers, who are leading in the most challenging environment ever, have never even been part of a great team environment themselves. This is terrifying.

In this interactive event, learn how you can break the cycle of bad bosses, help your people live more human and fulfilled lives through their work, and make them far more effective, creative, and innovative at the same time.

Book Club: Atlas of the Heart by Brene Brown

Two virtual meetings:
Thursday, June 9 and Thursday, June 23 | 4:30-5:30 PM

We will read and discuss Dr. Brown's latest book Atlas of the Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience.
